David Crane taught literature and history at universities in Europe, America, Africa and Japan. His first book was a biography of the Byronic adventurer and fantasist Edward Trelawny, and since that he has written on a range of subjects from Scott of the Antarctic to the historic creation of the First World War cemeteries. Empires of the Dead, which was shortlisted for the 2013 Samuel Johnson Prize. His last book, ‘Went the Day Well? Witnessing Waterloo, was the recreation of a single critical day in British and European history explored through twenty-four interlinked stories.
